I am Sharon James, a second generation West Indian. Originally from London, now based in Dorset.
I hold a BA Hons in Fine Art Printmaking at Loughborough and an MA in Printmaking from Camberwell School of Art.
After a successful career as a lecturer in Art and Design, then ten years as a gallery owner, I am now a full time artist.
I would say I am a multidisciplinary artist and printmaker. My practice has evolved since the arrival of my three wonderful children. My work focuses on painting and drawing using many tools including digital.
I spent the six years exploring and enjoying the immediacy of these processes. Versus the more labour intensive printmaking.
My work is influenced by the tangible or the imagined.
I tend to engage with and respond to emotions, environments, or moments. Harnessing the ability of brushstrokes to communicate intention where words have no place. Relying on the interplay of line, colour, shape and form.
There is an ongoing autobiographical theme. It explores my experience of being a black gay woman, a mother, my heritage and current affairs.
I have developed a contemporary body of work. It articulates my world with vibrancy and vigour.
